Sunset over Marine Lake, Weston-super-Mare

29th Nov 2012: - It made huge plumes of smoke to get my broken car started so I almost gave up. With a healthy car I'd have gone to the Somerset Levels, but with my dodgy one I thought I'd stay near home. I'm glad I did, it was a great sunset (even if I have already got many images of this view!)

Sunset over Clifton Suspension Bridge

This sunset was a welcome surprise; it looked like it would grey over completely on my way there, but it ended up with the perfect amount of cloud for a glorious backdrop!

7/11/2012: - Particularly pleased with the balance of white light (created by my LEDs) and warm street lighting in this image of the London Plane Trees at The Circus
in my old home town of Bath, and the scattering of leaves complete the images nicely. Don't you just love Autumn?

Illuminated Beech Trees, Night, Mist, Somerset Levels

30/10/2012: - Last night's full moon inspired me out; I was cozy on the sofa with a cup of tea but knew it could be good,  so I went for a walk at 9pm with my headlight. Not that I reall...
y needed it, the moon was so bright. So glad I did, the mist on the Somerset Levels was a stunning sight. Glorious!

Westonbirt Arboretum at peak time

28/10/2012: - Peak time for the Autumn colours also means traffic jams and thousands of other people (most of whom seemed to be photographers!); it was still great to see the stunning Acers though

The back garden on a dewy morning
21/10/2012: - These magnificent yellow Rudbeckias have been in flower for months, what great performers they are. I'm not a great fan of yellow, but I love the way they flower late, when most of the garden is dying back

Teignmouth

Promising cloud and light so I drove to Teignmouth, a location I didn't have any good pictures of. The light didn't get any good, so I had to wait for night and the lights to come on; I'm glad I did, everything looked so much better after dark!

Been meaning to photograph Torquay harbour at dusk for years, so I'm glad I finally got around to it last night!

It's a long drive, but just one good picture makes it all worthwhile

After finishing my customers print orders I had a few hours spare, the weather was a little too cloudy but what the hell, Wiltshire it is. I just love the big open spaces, chalk fields and monuments around Avebury. I got there and it had clouded over, but I waited around for an hour or so to see sun coming towards a gap in the clouds, so I drove as fast as I could to the White Horse. I only got one shot, then it clouded over for the rest of the day, so I headed home. Good shot though! More at http://www.tonyhowell.co.uk/photographsofwiltshire.htm

Castle Combe in infrared

Older buildings covered with foliage make great infrared subjects, and The Manor House Hotel is one of the best I've seen; must
go back to catch the leaves in full Autumn colours too

While in Italy I did some images of the fine Cemetery Sculptures in Pisa. Being near mountains made of marble means there were plenty of good ones (scroll down the Tuscany page)

People Posing for Photographs by The Leaning Tower of Pisa.

They're trying to make it look as though they're holding up the Leaning Tower (or pushing it over) and it's not easy to get it right. I saw many people giving up as they couldn't get their hands, arms or even legs in the right place

Trip to Pisa, Tuscany

Went to Pisa to photograph the famous Leaning Tower and the other great buildings in the 'Campo Dei Miracoli' (Field of Miracles). See more at

Pebbles at Westward Ho!

Thanks to digital technology this is sharp from front to back. It's a combination of 15 images focused in different places, then stitched together on computer. Wonderful stuff; in the old days you could have done this with a 5x4 inch view camera, but who wants to go back there? I've had my days with film.

Made a quick 13 second movie at The Mendip Hills today. Haven't made a time-lapse since film in the 1980's!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9IFsiB2yZU&feature=youtu.be

No landscapes, but moo

2 hour walk over the top of The Mendip Hills yesterday, hoping for some good light in amongst all the showers. Unfortunately the only thing that happened between the showers was driving rain and 50mph gusts that were hard to stand up in!
So...
, the landscape photographer had to revert to contingency; just shoot something else. Luckily I had good company

I love Cows, as this page hopefully shows: -

A moody sky usually makes for good dusk shots, so I took a quick drive to the local beach. The spring tide was very high, the rain came down but I still managed to get a few good shots before it got too dark at 10:15pm. Weston-super-Mare can even look Mediterranean in the right light!

Devon & Cornwall with the Nikon D800E camera

This new camera is very versatile, and nice and easy to use. You need the very best lenses and good technique to get the best from it though. Any slip-ups look terrible, and I've made quite a few already! A quick trip down to Cornwall is a joy in May/June time - not too busy, but nice warm weather - or so I thought. I headed down in my sandals and shorts, got to Cornwall and quickly changed back into long trousers, socks and a fleece!

Nikon D800E

Nikon D800E. A new camera takes a while to get used to, but this one is a joy to use after so much medium format. Of course the quality isn't as good as the Phase One camera/P45 that I'm used to; the files look like typical DSLR files but are much larger, so they'll print big.

Massive rain cloud

Almost cursed a massive rain cloud last night at Kimmeridge, but after it went over the
light was amazing for about 20 minutes, such drama in the sky. Love it! Slept in the car, freezing cold all night then woke at 4:20am to a frost. May is supposed to be a warm month isn't it?

Somerset Photography Workshop

I've been leading a two-day photography workshop around Somerset; pretty bad weather for tuition, but as far as creating moody images goes it's hard to beat. I managed to take a few hand-held pictures myself with the Sony NEX-7 - it has no mirror like DSLR's, so hand holding is less vulnerable to camera shake. This camera still surprises me quality-wise, I love it. Priddy Ponds is a great location on the top of the Mendip Hills, see more at http://www.tonyhowell.co.uk/priddyponds.htm

Great clouds and reflections at Priddy Ponds on Tuesday. I was tired and hungry but who cares when there are sights like this to see? Photography is so great when all the elements come together - food and rest can wait
