Almost didn't - I've been going for 30 years - glad I did! A brief 2 hour visit to Westonbirt Arboretum. I've been there so many times over 30 years, I knew that
I'd end up taking pictures that are similar to ones I've done before. Luckily I couldn't stop myself, and although the images aren't anything new for me, I just loved being there. This image has NOT been 'photoshopped' - you may have seen those images with someone's shoes in red whilst the rest is in black and white? This picture may look like that style of image, but this is how the scene really looked

One of my favourite trees, The Tulip Tree at Stourhead in yesterday's glorious sunshine. Normally I choose one or two from my outing to put on my website, but I like all five I did yesterday; they each have something to offer. If I had to choose it would be this one, but I felt that they all deserved a showing. See the others at: - http://www.tonyhowell.co.uk/newimages.htm

Great weather yesterday (for October), I was outside working in a shirt, too warm with a fleece on. Here's one of the Suspension Bridge from an infrared camera. More at http://www.tonyhowell.co.uk/new/bristolphotos.htm

Nice golden light yesterday, around 7pm at Glastonbury. The sheep make it though. See the others at http://www.tonyhowell.co.uk/new/glastonburyphotographs.htm

Wispy clouds; perfect for infrared shots so I took a trip to Bristol. You can photograph in the middle of the day with infrared; something you shouldn't do normally  http://tonyhowell.co.uk/new/bristolphotos.htm

A short holiday in Cornwall - not many images taken as it was a family holiday, and I'd prefer to stay married to my wife. Great weather for three days though. This Eagle Owl perched in just the right place at Screech Owl Sanctuary.

Last night I went to catch the sunset at Uphill, Weston-super-Mare but it wasn't any good. The golden light beforehand was great for the nearby cows though

Always a pleasure to visit Clevedon at sunset with a high tide; people line up along the seafront to watch the sun go down, its a real occasion. After starting grey, this sunset turned out very well - http://www.tonyhowell.co.uk/clevedonpier.htm

July 18th 2013: - It was good to escape the hot weather in England - Scotland was reassuringly cooler! Just a short trip of a few days and every image
was hand-held as it was a family break. I certainly missed my tripod but hope to return soon. See the rest - http://www.tonyhowell.co.uk/photographsofscotland.htm

Just back from a very hot Cornwall - what weather we're having, it's great. No cloud though, which means I switch from regular landscapes to night and infrared photography. Perfect for tin mines! I just love them, so photogenic and brimming with history. This one also features part of The Milky Way

Infrared Trees and Ferns

Took my camera rain cover out for a walk through Priors Wood, Bristol. Ferns look so good when wet and with raindrops pouring down I had no choice but to use a raincover initially. Shooting in the rain is good for practicing patience, its a right fiddle! After the rain I had the place to myself, and the rest of the world disappeared. Just me and the trees and ferns. Just doing it for the love of it. This image was shot hand-held lying on the ground (Canon 5D Mk II converted to infrared, 17mm TS-E tilt-shift lens). See the rest:-

Watched the sun go down on Dartmoor last night and stayed photographing until 1am, it was cold and slightly foggy but well worthwhile. Being alone somewhere like that is definitely good for the soul! I'm enjoying light painting (first two images below), it makes for a different kind of image

The Bluebells are late this year but are peaking now, and looking good. I slept in the car and it was soooo cold! Last night by torchlight at Micheldever Woods, Hampshire : -

It's Fern time.....with the new Canon 6D

Ferns are uncurling everywhere, I love this time of year. Bluebells will be peaking in a week or so. I'm enjoying the new Canon 6D very much and hope to do a review sometime soon. If you're thinking of going full-frame, the 6D is a great way to start. Love the smooth shutter, horizon level and Aspect Ratios (so you can compose in 4:3, 5x4, Square etc). It's so much better than the 5D II. Still waiting for built in flash, higher resolution and swivel screen, but
Canon don't agree with what I want in a camera, which is why Nikon are doing so well with the D800E

Quick trip to Wales

At last I could get out and take some pictures! I just love the Tintern area of Wales, so I went to get some infrared shots of St Marys Church

7th May 2013: - beautiful late sunlight on the west front of the Cathedral this evening, shot with the amazing Canon TS-E 17mm Tilt-Shift lens, which corrects for the bendy 'falling over backwards' look of normal wide lenses

Thursday, 14 March 2013

A quick trip to Exmoor; I went to Willett Tower for the first time. It's a ruined church tower folly near Elsworthy. Took one sunny shot, and this moody one  - and I prefer the moody one by far, but the sunny one is more likely to sell

A fine spring day in Bath

6th March 2013: - Warm and sunny; have I woken up in another country? No, it's a rare day in early spring. For years I've seen the crocuses grow here at The Circus, I finally caught a good day when they were out in flower

19th February 2013: - Two hour walk to Watern Tor; it may look nice and sunny but it was freezing cold and windy. On the way back I fell into a bog which came up to my groin! I laughed aloud, shame there was no-one else to see it. Spent the next two hours in soggy trousers. The walk I took was long, around the hills - to miss out the boggy areas. Ahem.

Blacknore Lighthouse

7th February 2013: - Blacknore Lighthouse, Portishead. After several unsuccessful trips I got some good shots within a few hours. It's great to be by the sea when the sun's going down; crashing waves, fresh air, beautiful light. I love the green rolling hills of England,
but being near the sea beats the countryside every time for me

Snow over Somerset

21st January 2013: - Nice coating of snow meant I was out looking for my favourite snowy subject, trees of course

11th January 2013: - Why bother going to places that you've already successfully photographed many times before? Because I love being there, and I often come up with something a little different than before. I like the foreground colours in this image of The Severn Bridge
